## What it is

xAI is a US artificial intelligence company founded in Palo Alto, California on March 9, 2023 by Elon Musk and eleven researchers drawn from Google, DeepMind, Microsoft Research, OpenAI, and Tesla. Its stated mission is to accelerate human scientific discovery by building AI oriented toward understanding the universe. The company's flagship product is Grok, a large-language-model chatbot with real-time search, voice, and image generation integrated with X (formerly Twitter). The Colossus GPU supercluster in Memphis, Tennessee underpins Grok's training and inference. As of May 2026, xAI ceased operating as an independent company and was absorbed into SpaceX as its SpaceXAI division.

## History

Musk announced xAI publicly in July 2023, four months after incorporating it. The twelve founding team members included Igor Babuschkin as chief engineer (ex-DeepMind and OpenAI), Greg Yang on theoretical scaling research (ex-Microsoft Research), Christian Szegedy (ex-Google), and Jimmy Ba (ex-University of Toronto), among others. Grok launched in November 2023 for X Premium subscribers, trained in part on X platform data and pitched as a "maximum truth-seeking" alternative to ChatGPT and Claude.

In June 2024 xAI announced construction of Colossus in Memphis, Tennessee. After a 122-day build, the cluster went fully operational in December 2024 as, by xAI's own description, the world's largest AI supercomputer. The company progressed through multiple funding rounds, including a Series B and a Series C at roughly US$50bn valuation, before closing an upsized [Series E](/en/n/xai-series-e-20bn-2026) of US$20bn in January 2026 at approximately US$230bn, with Nvidia and Cisco as strategic investors alongside the Qatar Investment Authority, Abu Dhabi's MGX, Valor, Fidelity, Stepstone, and Baron. By early 2026 Colossus had expanded to approximately 555,000 Nvidia GPUs across 2 gigawatts of power capacity, representing an estimated US$18bn in GPU investment. xAI separately agreed to lease the full output of the Colossus 1 facility to rival Anthropic at approximately US$1.25bn per month through May 2029, treating raw compute as a separately monetisable asset.

SpaceX acquired xAI in February 2026 in the largest corporate merger on record, valuing the combined entity at approximately US$1.25 trillion. On May 6, 2026, Musk announced via X that xAI would be dissolved as a separate legal entity and operate going forward as SpaceXAI, the AI division of SpaceX, covering Grok, X, and the Colossus infrastructure.

## Current state

As of early July 2026, xAI no longer exists as an independent company. All operations sit inside SpaceX under the SpaceXAI label. Grok models continue to iterate under that structure. The Colossus cluster is on track to reach 1 million Nvidia GPUs by end-2026. Most of the original co-founders have departed: Babuschkin left in August 2025 to start a venture fund; Yang departed in January 2026 citing health; by mid-2026 published reports put the departure count at nine of the twelve named co-founders. Musk chairs SpaceXAI while also leading SpaceX and Tesla, and serves as a senior adviser to the US federal executive.

## Relationships

X (formerly Twitter) provided training data and consumer distribution for Grok from the start, blurring the line between xAI and Musk's social media platform before the formal SpaceX merger. Tesla contributed engineering personnel. Nvidia is both a strategic investor and Colossus's principal chip supplier, creating a supplier-investor conflict it also holds with Anthropic and OpenAI. The Anthropic compute lease makes Anthropic's own training capacity partly dependent on a direct competitor's physical infrastructure, an unusual structural tie between rivals. The Qatar Investment Authority and Abu Dhabi's MGX link xAI to Gulf sovereign capital simultaneously invested in other frontier labs. US export-control rules on advanced Nvidia chips govern which jurisdictions can access Grok's API and constrain Colossus's future expansion if GPU availability tightens.

## What to watch

Whether SpaceXAI sustains Grok's model-release cadence against OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic after absorbing most of xAI's co-founding technical talent. SpaceX's IPO timeline and how the absorbed xAI valuation factors into the listing price and structure. The Colossus expansion toward 1 million GPUs and the environmental, grid, and community impact of its Memphis power draw. Whether the Anthropic compute lease renews after May 2029 or Anthropic builds competing infrastructure. Any sovereign government AI contracts that follow from SpaceX's existing US federal relationships.
