CNBC reported the yen sliding past 161 per dollar on June 19, nearing the 40-year low. Japan's Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama warned the G7 Japan was 'prepared to take decisive action on speculative moves' and confirmed a call with US Treasury Secretary Bessent to coordinate if needed. The Bank of Japan had raised policy rates to 1.0% on June 16, the highest since 1995, but markets judged it insufficient to close the rate gap with the US.
