Real gross domestic income rose 15.6% on-year in Q2, the highest since the first quarter of 1988. Annual GDP growth of 3%, the fastest in five years, is now within reach.

Why it matters

The data show a South Korean economy unusually dependent on chip demand at a moment when that demand itself depends partly on the AI infrastructure buildout led by hyperscalers. Weak construction, persistent regional military tensions and the new US forced-labor tariffs (which impose at least 12.5% on South Korean goods) are the main downside risks to the back half of 2026.
