  1. A Reuters analysis published July 1 and picked up by US News, Al-Monitor and others found that NATO allies 'have grown silent on rights concerns in Turkey.' Western diplomats say they prefer raising concerns privately, believing overt criticism achieves little given Turkey's strategic value. The US posture is shaped by Trump's bilateral relationship with Erdogan, whom he 'regularly calls a friend.' Allied leaders are not expected to raise the jailing of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu (CHP presidential candidate) during the Ankara summit. Stockholm Center for Freedom separately confirmed: of the 225 detained, 135 were referred to court, 103 remanded in pretrial detention and 26 placed under judicial control (house arrest).

  2. The 13-day assembly ban took effect at midnight July 1. At least 178 of the 225 pre-summit detainees were sent to pretrial detention by courts; 34 were placed under house arrest pending investigation. Amnesty International called on NATO member states to raise the issue directly with Turkish authorities before the July 7-8 summit. No NATO government had made a public statement on the ban as of July 1.
